Tooele County Getting Younger...and Getting Older!

Doesn't make much sense, does it? In last night's Tooele Transcript-Bulletin, Tim Gillie reported that, according to 2010 Census data, 31% of Tooele County's population is under 14 years old!

That's an amazing number, even in Utah. The rest of the State is about 27% and the nation is 20%. The article also mentioned that our median age is 29.6, a bit higher than the State average, although predictably lower than the national median of 35.8.

Obviously, I'm one of those stat geeks. But, it was the reasons for these numbers intrigue me.

The lady he spoke to for comment, Pam Perlich from the U of U, sounds like a fan of Tooele County. She mentioned that Tooele County should be attractive for young families, citing the quality of life issues I've been talking about for years. From recreation opportunities to affordable housing to the rural "feel".

Tooele County has it all.

Ms. Perlich also mentioned some potential pitfalls to having such a youthful population.

Of major concern, is the effect on the education system. This isn't news to the Tooele County School District, as they've been actively working to manage growth for years, and doing a great job with limited resources.

She also mentioned that it would be wise to make plans for youth recreation and other programs, as we still are shipping a lot of our young parents to the Salt Lake Valley to work. Hopefully, all of the emphasis on economic development and job creation will help with that problem over the next few years. Nicole Cline, Tooele County Economic Development Director, says that the County has been planning on explosive growth from new families for some time, citing requirements on developers in Stansbury Park to plan on more parks than usually would be included in most areas as an example.

All of this "geeky" info simply reinforces what I've been saying for years. Tooele County is the best place there is for raising your family. Open spaces, rural lifestyle, short commute to a major metropolitan area, and affordable housing are just a few of the reasons. Come visit us, and find out what so many folks are finding here!
